Extra day of rush a smart move by council

The Interfraternity Council's move to approve the addition of an extra day to the rush process to give potential members more time to review fraternities should be applauded.

Joining a fraternity is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Men who choose to go Greek are making a significant commitment, and they should make sure that the fraternity they pick is compatible with their interests and values. Two days appear insufficient to get a good grasp of what the several chapters on campus are all about, especially for students who are unable to participate in summer informal recruitment activities.

While some students may have their heart set on a particular fraternity, they should not blindfold themselves and ignore other prospects. Fraternities other than their first pick may have their eye on them as well, and the extra rush day will give prospective members an opportunity to visit those chapters in a less stressful environment, allowing fraternities and potential recruits to discover whether they are a good fit.

Fraternity membership offers students a vibrant social life, resources and a sense of community and family - all factors that will shape if not define their college experience. Deciding to forge such strong ties with an organization is definitely not a decision that should be, for the lack of a better term, rushed.
