After days of careful carving, students' pumpkin creations were put on display and judged in Market Square Thursday night.

Kelly Raw, marketing manager for dining services, organized the event that took place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Raw wrote in an e-mail that the pumpkins were available for students to pick out Oct. 27 and 28 in Market Square.

She wrote that sixty pumpkins were ordered for students to sign out at the register free of charge.

All the pumpkins ordered were gone within hours of being put out for students to take, she wrote.

Kristin Sheehy, a sophomore graphic design major, unknowingly entered the contest with her roommates. She found out when one of her roommates presented her with a pumpkin she had picked up at the Brown-Lupton University Union.

Dru Carroll, a freshman pre-business major, said he entered the contest because he thought it would be a fun idea.

"My roommate has been carving pumpkins forever. He's had experience in it ... I think our pumpkin's going to win ... it looks pretty awesome," Carroll said before the judging began.

Judging was based on creativity and originality. There were three categories, including school spirit pumpkin, scariest pumpkin and funniest-looking pumpkin.

Carroll and his partner ended up taking the prize of $75 in Campus Cash for scariest pumpkin.

Second place winner Kristin Sheehy and her two partners won $50 in Campus Cash for funniest pumpkin.

Rebecca Oglesby, a psychology major, came in third place and won $25 in Campus Cash for her school spirit pumpkin.
