Quick lunches still leave healthy options

It's noon. You have 10 minutes to get to your next class, but that growling stomach has a mind of its own. You shouldn't have slept in and skipped breakfast today. It's your long day. You still have a lab to go to and dinner is too far in the future to be of any good to you. The choices you have vary, including cutting class or whatever is during the only possible meal, a vending machine which will give you a false sense of satisfaction, buying a sandwich with your limited number of Frog Bucks or something that will fill you without emptying your wallet.

The problem with skipping midday meals is that it causes excessive hunger around dinner time. The lines are getting longer at the Market Square, and often students can't finish their meals in time.

"Even though Market Square offers dine-in services only, students don't have time to leave campus to get healthy to-go items," says Rebecca Dority, an instructor in nutrition, "There are actually several options on campus where students can get a nutritious lunch to-go if they are not able to take the time to go to Market Square."

On-campus locations such as Sub Connection and NRG provide takeout options such as sandwiches and sushi, Dority said. Smoothies can also be a healthy option if they are made with fresh fruit and fruit juices, she said.

"Some of the smoothies are high in calories and sugar, however, so I wouldn't recommend smoothies as everyday choices," Dority said.

If time is still an issue, why not make your own lunch? All you need are a few simple cooking utensils, such as silverware and bowls.

Why should we have to spend money to make our own lunches outside of market square when we're already paying $1799???
