The Horned Frogs rolled past the Texas Southern Tigers at the University Recreation Center on Tuesday, sweeping them 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-13). The team begins the season 4-0 for just the third time in school history.

Despite being up 17-10 in the first set, head volleyball coach Prentice Lewis called a timeout to get her team back on track.

"(Lewis told us) to limit our mistakes, because we had given the other team close to all of their points because of our mistakes, and just take care of our side of the net," freshman setter Megan Munce said.

Defense played an important part in the second and third sets, which produced 13 tie scores and eight lead changes. Freshman Sarah Joeckel and junior Katelyn Blackwood were tied with six digs while providing the defense needed at the front of the net. Freshman Jess Menden also helped the effort with 23 assists.

Lewis said she used those last two games to get some experience for younger players on the team.

"Everybody who played those last two matches were either freshmen or were first year playing at a collegiate level," Lewis said.

Munce is one of six freshmen and led the team with nine kills.

"I think we just needed to play together because in the last two games it was all freshmen and Victoria (Hernandez)," Munce said.

Lewis said this game was added to the team's schedule to give the team a match in the middle of a school week.

"We put this game in our schedule so that we could have a mid-week match where we're working on particular skills," Lewis said.

Up next for the Horned Frogs are back-to-back matches Saturday, both in Edinburg against Prairie View A&M and UT-Pan American at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.

It's a great picture but it's not senior Devon Kirk. This picture is of freshman Sarah Joeckel.
