Man admits to campus thefts, trial date set

A man who claims to have committed more than 300 thefts in the past 22 years on the TCU campus is scheduled to go to trial Monday for four separate counts of theft.
Keith Money, 49, was arrested by TCU Police for stealing a wallet May 30 from the University Recreation Center, TCU Police Sgt. Kelly Ham said.
Prior to his imprisonment, Money stated in police documents he had committed just as many thefts at SMU, the University of Texas at Dallas, the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of North Texas.
According to TCU Police reports, Money gave a written statement admitting to the May 30 theft and 32 other thefts since his release from prison in November 2006.
Ham said Money told him he was the suspect who stole Beata Jones' wallet, associate professor of professional practice in information systems/e-business, from the Dan Rogers Hall. In January, Jones chased him down and Money proceeded to give the wallet back to her.
Money explained his strategy, saying that he targeted female secretaries, who have a tendency to leave their purses unattended while briefly stepping out of the room, Ham said.
Money successfully used this technique when he stole from Vicki Whistler, the production manager for the Daily Skiff, in a May 17 incident. TCU Police reports indicate that Whistler left her wallet unattended in her office located in the Moudy South Building before she noticed it was missing.
It was after this theft that Ham began tracking Money. Ham said Money began making fraudulent charges with the stolen checks and credit cards at the 7-Eleven on West Berry Street and other locations.
Ham said the 7-Eleven surveillance cameras and the university surveillance security cameras made it possible to identify Money.
"I knew who I was looking for I just didn't know his name," Ham said.
According to police records, Money has been arrested 21 times and served about four years in prison in October 2002 for the theft of property with two or more prior convictions.
Tarrant County Sheriff's spokesman Terry Grisham said Money committed seven prior felonies including one state jail felony. Money is in custody at the Tarrant County Jail until his court date, Grisham said.
