The battle between the Horned Frogs, No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference, and BYU, No.2 in the MWC, ended with a score of 5-0 in front of a noticeable BYU crowd in Fort Worth.
The starting pitchers, TCU's Jake Arrieta and BYU's Jesse Craig, carried a scoreless stalemate that lasted well into the eighth inning until BYU left fielder Apana Nakayama ended the deadlock with a towering home run that sailed over the center field wall.
And from there the Horned Frogs couldn't stop the bleeding.
The Cougars went one to rip off 4 straight runs in the ninth, but that crushed inside fastball was the only offense BYU needed as they handed the team their first loss at home in 20 games.
Arrieta said he thought it was one of the best games he pitched but it was a one mistake game.
Jim Schlossnage, TCU Head Coach, said he thought Arrieta pitched well and he didn't think it would have mattered if the team gave up two runs or four runs.
"Jesse (Craig) was the show tonight," Schlossnagle said.
Arrieta said at Nakayama's previous at bat he struck him out using the same sort of pitch but this time he left the pitch out over the plate where Arrieta said Nakayama will hit it every time.
"It was hard to watch," Arrieta said.
TCU center fielder Clint Arnold, MWC player of the week, was 0-3 in the game.
Arnold said BYU is a good club but he thinks the team will bounce back in the next few games.
The loss "made us more mad than anything," Arnold said.
The loss drops the Horned Frogs to 28-10 overall and 10-2 in the conference.
Both losses came at the hands of BYU.
The last time TCU was shutout was May 2, 2006 when they lost to Dallas Baptist University 3-0.
